What is a Sleep Regression?
A sleep regression is a temporary phase where your baby’s sleep patterns change, often due to developmental leaps, teething, or big milestones like learning to crawl or walk. Common ages for sleep regressions include 4 months, 8-10 months, and 18 months, though every baby is different.
It’s important to remember that regressions are a sign of progress. Your baby is learning and growing, which might make sleep a little harder temporarily.
How to Handle a Sleep Regression
Stay Consistent
Stick to your baby’s bedtime routine and usual schedule as much as possible. Consistency provides comfort and helps your baby get back on track faster.
Offer Extra Comfort (Within Reason)
A little extra soothing is okay, but avoid creating new habits that might be hard to break later, like rocking or feeding to sleep if your baby usually self-soothes.
Focus on Daytime Sleep
Overtiredness can make sleep regressions worse. Prioritize naps and ensure your baby is getting enough daytime rest.
Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment
Keep your baby’s sleep space dark, quiet, and cool. A white noise machine can help block out distractions and promote longer stretches of sleep.
Be Patient and Flexible
Sleep regressions are temporary! With patience and consistency, your baby will return to their usual sleep patterns in a few weeks.
