Spring Sleep Challenges: How Seasonal Changes Affect Your Baby’s Sleep

Seasonal sleep struggles

Ah, spring — longer days, blooming flowers, and that fresh-air feeling. But while this season brings so many beautiful changes, it can also stir up a few sleep challenges for your little one. If your baby has suddenly started waking earlier, taking shorter naps, or seems fussier at bedtime, you’re not alone.

Let’s talk about why spring can throw off your baby’s sleep — and what you can do to help.

More Daylight = Earlier Wake-Ups

With sunrise creeping earlier each morning, babies (especially those sensitive to light) may start waking before you’re ready for the day to begin. Sunlight tells our bodies it’s time to get up — and it does the same for babies!

Try this:
Use blackout curtains to keep the nursery dark in the early hours. Even a small sliver of light can signal “time to wake!” A consistent wake-up time, paired with a dark, calm room, helps reinforce their natural circadian rhythm.

Seasonal Allergies Can Disrupt Sleep

Spring allergies can start as early as infancy. Stuffy noses, sneezing, or mild congestion can make it harder for babies to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Try this:
Chat with your pediatrician if you suspect allergies. A humidifier, frequent sheet changes, and keeping windows closed during high pollen days can help. Always follow your doctor’s recommendations for safe relief.

Changing Temperatures = Uncomfortable Nights

Spring days may be warm, but nights can still be chilly. Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as easily as adults, so a too-hot or too-cold room may lead to wake-ups.

Try this:
Keep the room between 68–72°F and dress your baby in breathable layers. A sleep sack is a great option for staying cozy without the risks of loose blankets (always follow AAP safe sleep guidelines!).

Shifting Routines

As the days get longer, outdoor time increases — which is great! But sometimes dinner, bath, and bedtime get pushed back a bit later.

Try this:
Stick to a consistent bedtime routine and schedule, even when springtime fun tempts you to stretch the day. Predictability helps babies wind down and signals that sleep is coming.

Seasonal shifts are natural — and so are the sleep hiccups that come with them. The good news? With a few simple adjustments, your baby can sleep well through the changes spring brings.
