If you’ve ever fallen asleep nursing your baby in bed or found yourself wondering, “Would we all just sleep better if we shared a bed?”—you’re not alone. Nearly half of parents report bed-sharing at some point during their baby’s first year. But is it safe?

Let’s talk about it—judgment-free, and backed by facts.

First, What Is Co-Sleeping?

“Co-sleeping” often gets used to describe a few different things:

  • Room-sharing: Baby sleeps in the same room, but in their own safe sleep space (like a crib or bassinet)
  • Bed-sharing: Baby sleeps in the same bed as a parent or caregiver

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports room-sharing without bed-sharing for at least the first 6 months (but up to 12 months). Why? Because it significantly reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Why Bed-Sharing Isn’t Recommended

Even though bed-sharing may feel comforting or convenient—especially during overnight feeds—it comes with real risks.

Factors like soft mattresses, pillows, loose blankets, and even a tired parent can quickly turn dangerous. According to the AAP, there is no situation where bed-sharing is considered safe for infants.

So, What’s the Safe Alternative?

Here’s the sweet spot:
Room-sharing with your baby in a separate crib or bassinet, close enough for you to see and hear them.
This setup supports bonding, makes night feeds easier, and helps reduce SIDS risk—all while allowing your baby to sleep in their own safe space.

I know. When you’re exhausted, bed-sharing can feel like the only way to survive the night. But sleep doesn’t have to come at the expense of safety.

-Make the room dark and calm with white noise
-Create a bedtime routine that sets the stage for longer stretches of independent sleep

With the right strategies, better sleep and safe sleep are 100% possible.
